Here are a few questions and answers about the new FIE rules in regards to masks. All new masks sold by Leon Paul are compliant with the FIE rule changes that will come into effect next season in Septembre 2018. Why are the FIE changing the rules for all FIE masks? I have recently returned from the World Championships in Rome, Italy which ran from the 7th-12th November 2017 it was a great but challenging event in more than one way! We departed for Rome on 5th November as we had weapons check on the 6th, my team mates were competing on 7th/8th and I was competing on 8th/9th Just after we arrived in Rome, I started to feel unwell. This is one thing that every athlete dreads at an event of such importance, unfortunately it only got worse and reached a peak on Epee day. I always take every sensible precaution but sometimes you just get sick and have to make the best of what you have and ensure you work even harder on getting the right nutritional input. This blog post has been written by Peter Barrett head coach of Plymouth fencing club after they went fully wireless in April 2017 with 14 sets of wireless fencing equipment replacing 15 ancient scoring sets. 15 Fencing ‘Boxes’ 30 Ground Leads 30 Spools (if they are all working) 6 Mains extension leads That’s a lot of equipment to set up and put away 3 times a week. Hey Leon Paul lovers! The new season has just started so it’s time for a new blog. Last season I took a little break from training because of the very hectic period around the 2016 Rio Olympics. I learned after Beijing 2008 and London 2012 that it is very important to give your body and mind a long period of regeneration before starting another Olympic cycle. Continue reading →
Looking back on Rio 2016 With only 12 places available in my event, to qualify for the 2016 Paralympic Games I had to either win direct qualifiers Zonal/World Championships or rank within the top 6 of the world rankings after the automatic and host nation places had been awarded. The qualifying period for this ran from Sept 2014 - May 2016 and I was thrilled to secure an early lead in the rankings, winning GB's first Wheelchair fencing World Cup Gold in the first event and going on to complete a hat-trick in the next two events. The Fencing Podcast was launched by two Scottish fencers/coaches/nerds in the immediate aftermath of the Rio Olympics. Sean Walton and Gavin McMenemy are the voices of the podcast, after a friend suggested they give the medium a try. Gav has a history of online fencing presence - maintaining the peace as a moderator on Leon Paul’s Fencing Forum (and the US-based fencing.net) for many years - and Sean has written fencing blogs, so a podcast seemed the logical next step. While there is a lot of online discussion and writing about fencing, there is little spoken-word output. Continue reading →
