lives on in our hearts and in our minds. His influence is our raison d’être; so too his philosophy and values - what Leon Paul achieved, and what he shaped. What Leon Paul started and finished, to then be reinvented. Fencing inspired is Leon Paul’s iconic legacy. It is the memory of a life’s work - unlimited, echoing from generation to generation.
Leon Paul, a First World War French army fencing Maître d’Armes, sets up a fencing boutique and training salle in London’s Covent Garden, 1921.
Sons René and Raymond join the family business. Both brothers go on to be Olympic fencers with an unassailable knowledge of the sport. Further generations of fencers are born, as Maestro Leon Paul coaches Allan Jay to become Foil World Champion in 1954. Leon Paul’s student Bob Andersen becomes British Olympic Coach, going on to bring expert sword fighting to Hollywood films, such as Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean.
This sees another age of the Paul family. Cousins Barry and Steven place history on repeat - training as world-class fencers as well as joining the thriving family business, actively modernising the development of the equipment and it’s manufacture. Launching the first Leon Paul blades from their own mechanical forge, Leon Paul’s focus on invention grows with Barry designing the world’s first sectional pistes. These are used in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and in all major fencing events since.
The here and the now. With brothers Alex and Ben and over 100 years of pioneering fencing equipment behind them, Leon Paul continues towards an integrated cultural space for fencing. Whether it’s wireless artistry or piste lighting mastery, it’s 21st Century Fencing - a forward-looking Generation LP.
