Jaimie has had an astonishing start to his fencing career, two-time Junior World Cup winner and British Senior, U23, U20 & U17 Champion are just a few of his past results. Now as his Junior season has come to an end and Jaimie is gearing up for the Senior European and World Championships this summer - we got the chance to have a chat with him and reflect on his journey so far.
Growing up Jaimie’s early years were always filled with sports; badminton, tennis, football and hockey competed for his attention alongside fencing from an early age. "I was trying to build a broad athletic ability," Jamie explains. Something that has undoubtedly helped shape him into the athletic fencer he is today.
Jaimie’s approach is really what sets him apart. Fencing is his full-time job both mentally and physically, training intensively and constantly working on improvement. His current mid-season routine involves training three nights a week, supplemented by strength and conditioning work during the day. Alongside competing most weekends doing both the full Junior and Senior circuit.
When asked about his proudest moment so far in fencing, Jaimie beelines straight to winning his first Senior National title. This is a particularly special achievement, knowing his father had previously won the same title 13 years earlier. He also reminisced about the Sabadell Junior World Cup, an event he won despite having recently snapped his ankle, and the Junior World Cup in Bangkok, where he had an extremely tough side of the tableau yet still finished on top.
For young fencers looking to follow in his footsteps, Jaimie offers great advice: "Focus on technique, don't be afraid to make mistakes, and find the moves that work best for you." It's a philosophy that has served him well, allowing him to dominate at both the Junior and Senior World Cups.
Being part of the Leon Paul team is more than just sponsorship for Jaimie. It's a full-circle moment. "I used to watch these world-class fencers online, wanting to be just like them,". "Now, I'm wearing the same mask with my name on it."
As Jaimie continues to compete and grow, he represents the new generation of fencers - athletes who are unashamedly themselves and draw from that to create a style of fencing that is uniquely them. And we are incredibly proud to watch his journey unfold.
