In previous years, we have offset our carbon emissions by working with Carbon Footprint Limited. This involved supporting projects such as Verified Carbon Standard offsets and a community tree-planting initiative in Kenya. While these efforts have been valuable, we’re now taking a closer look at how we offset to ensure our approach is as effective and impactful as possible.

There are two key reasons driving this reassessment:

1. Ensuring Robustness

Our priority is to make sure that the money we invest in offsets results in tangible, lasting emissions reductions equivalent to the emissions we produce. This requires confidence in the robustness of the offsets we choose. To that end, we are exploring options with highly trusted organisations, such as the Woodland Trust, whose projects align with our commitment to meaningful and verifiable impact.

2. Driving Industry-Wide Change

While conventional offsets can neutralise emissions on paper, they don’t address the systemic issues that create these emissions in the first place. We’re exploring whether we could redirect some or all of our offsetting resources towards driving lasting change within our industry and its supply chains.

One example of this is tackling emissions from logistics. As we highlighted in our last blog post, 50% of our emissions come from air freighting products to customers. Switching these shipments from air to sea freight could reduce emissions by approximately 100 times per tonne-kilometre. We’re actively investigating ways to make sea freight a more practical and cost-effective solution, both for us and for others in the industry.

What’s Next?

Our approach to offsetting is evolving, and we see this as an ongoing process of research and refinement. As we develop new strategies and identify better ways to make a positive impact, we’ll keep you updated on our progress.

By balancing robust offsets with initiatives that promote systemic change, we hope to ensure that our sustainability efforts are not just about reducing emissions but also about creating a more sustainable future for the industries we depend on.
