    Moonshot Piste

A moonshot idea is one that reinvents and revolutionises an industry or in our case a sport. Normally designers take a single product and look to make a series of incremental improvements. A moonshot idea is to improve by a factor of 10 making it a giant leap forward in a short space of time. Google calls these ideas project X, which just makes it sound very cool. I have always looked at each problem as they come up and then acted on this individual problem. Often through discussions with fencers, a “problem” is identified and we work out a...

Plymouth Fencing Club goes Wireless! Published on behalf of Peter Barrett - Head coach

This blog post has been written by Peter Barrett head coach of Plymouth fencing club after they went fully wireless in April 2017 with 14 sets of wireless fencing equipment replacing 15 ancient scoring sets.

    • 15 Fencing ‘Boxes’
    • 30 Ground Leads
    • 30 Spools (if they are all working)
    • 6 Mains extension leads

That’s a lot of equipment to set up and put away 3 times a week.

In addition to all the agro of pushing fencers to ‘get the boxes out’ comes the average repair cost of around £2,000 per year in keeping it all in working order.

    Nuts about nuts and pommels....

Nuts are not the most interesting part of a fencing weapon but they represent a snapshot into the slightly obsessive approach that Leon Paul take to design that flows through into everything we do. We believe our products should be made with little to no compromise and we push things to the limits and sometimes beyond.

    Nice nuts

Why are nuts so important in fencing?

How to mount a Fencing Sword.

How to mount a fencing sword? Mounting a weapon, making a sword, building a blade are just a few ways that people describe the process of putting together a fencing weapon. As many ways as there are to describe the action, there are to do it. You will find that many armourers have many different ways of doing it, and there are not necessarily any truly wrong ways. However, if you are new to mounting a weapon then this will be a good place to start on at least following a correct procedure, to ensure that your weapons last as long...

Big sword hits fencing mask in slow motion!

Now that I have your attention I wanted to talk to you about testing mask mesh quality for fencing and for the sport of HEMA. My name is Jacek Bujko. I have been helping Leon Paul develop a HEMA range of fencing equipment. I started fencing at a local sports club when I was twenty and then studied Historical European Martial Arts in Poland for a couple of years before eventually settling down with my own recreational fencing club. I am a huge fencing and HEMA fan I even got married in my fencing suit as it just felt right!

One of my first projects with Leon Paul was to develop a HEMA mask. I feel we have made some great updates and improvements to the HEMA mask. One of the things I have experienced and wanted to talk about was the D word…. DENTS!

crushed-mask This mask was run over by a car but......

    "My mask just got dented!"

    Then the inevitable:

"Was that blow really that strong?" "I didn't even feel that!"

are very common in our heads when we come to realize, that the precious new mask that we've just recently got is not so pristine anymore.

    How wireless fencing technology works.

I have spent the last few months listening to my brother, Alex Paul, talk about wireless technology. In that time I have learnt many new words like Farad (F). A Farad is a unit of capacitance. Capacitance is an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together….

wiremanoff_ad_v2-larger The Future of wireless sword fencing

Ok, so now I am just quoting Star Wars and to be honest when my brother starts talking about technology and science I normally zone out. So in short, it is magic and I may have misled you with the title of this blog post. Here is what I have found out about wireless technology in fencing:

People are so used to wired systems. They take ages to get used to the changes. People generally don’t like change and as a result are inherently mistrusting of wireless fencing as there are so many half-baked systems out there.
