The British National Fencing Championships 2003

In the centre of Britain in Cosford RAF base the best of British fencers slugged it out in soaring temperatures to find suitable champions.
The event took place over the weekend of the 12th and 13th of July. The large Gymnasium at Cosford was a great venue for the event and even though the temperature went up as high as 30 °C the large open hanger doors let quite a refreshing breeze through.

The results can be found at the British Fencing website but here are a few details of specific results and pictures and video clips.

Also Congratulations to the Salle Paul Womens Foil team who also got Gold.

Ziemek Wojciechowski, Claire Bennett, Sophie Troiano and Dominique Stowell.

For our two star mens foilists it was not so good- they drew each other in an early stage and a truly memorable match occurred. Richard Kruse going up by 10 to 1 and then an outstanding comeback by Laurence Halsted to get to 14 all. The final hit was then won by a very enthusiastic Laurence.
Jonathon Weeks (seen here on the right) later said "It was the best fencing I have seen from British fencers in years."
Laurence then went on to lose convincingly in the next round using the old excuse of "I was so worn out by Richard." (Train harder then!)
Pictures of the fight are shown in our screensaver found in downloads and/or at the top of this page.

Here is some video footage of Halsted - the hit is given against him but he swears its his point, answers on a postcard please:

As individuals they did not succeed - as a team they conquered all taking the Gold convincingly.

Ben Montague who missed Saturday fencing looked very sharp and Laurence, even after some late night drinks look even more charged than usual. Richard finished proceedings displaying some wonderful footwork.

Here are some clips of the fight:

Ben on form.
Laurence psyched.
Richard cruising.
Good thing come to those who wait in this the final hit.

Congratulations also to David Mansour for winning the mens foil. Here are some pictures and some video clips:

Well done Dave.
