What is the SR-71?
We wanted to combine the best attributes of traditionally forged epee blades and the more durable Leon Paul V-blades. In short, a lightweight, low -vibration, perfectly balanced blade with great point control and an incredibly long lifespan.

How was it designed?
We started by examining all the major characteristics of the most popular traditional blades and through this process Leon Paul were able to define how the SR-71 should respond over a series of fixed tests. We sampled the Kolobkov-Pro, a traditional BF and the Viniti. We measured the weight, balance point, rotational stiffness and the bend along the length of the blade. Using this sample data, we set about creating the SR-71 to combine the best characteristics of these blades. The finished product has the same bend profile and stiffness as a BF with the centre of gravity of the Kolobkov-Pro. Because of the Leon Paul V design it is far more long lasting than a standard forged blade and shaves 10g off the weight of a standard forged blade.

How is it made?
A traditional blade takes metal and stretches and shapes it by forging it with hammers at a very high temperature. A Leon Paul blade takes a flat piece of steel and forms it under extreme pressure without heat. The press used to make the blades can exert a force of up to 400 tons! Manufacturing the blades in this way means they last 3 to 5 times longer than a standard FIE epee blades. This process is far more consistent than traditional forging methods and means that we can make identical blades consistently. The tang is a separate cast piece that is braised onto the blade. This new tang is designed to add more weight to the forté area of the blade and bring the balance point back towards the hand. The blade now has a double bend, making its cross -section more like a W than a V which increaces lateral stiffness in the forte for improved parries.

How was the blade tested and signed off for production?
A wide range of athletes from the world’s top fencers through to club fencers tested the blade. The US Men’s Epee Team and European and World 2011 silver medallist Bas Verwijlen are some of the fencers that worked on the project. We also had samples out for testing in clubs in England, Italy, France and the US to maximize test data. The blade’s double -bend design went through more than 15 different development stages with fine tuning on each section of it’s length to ensure the finished product is as close to perfect as possible.

Why is it called the SR-71?
When the Leon Paul design team started the project, someone said they wanted to create the next Blackbird. Something that was so ground breaking that people would want to put a poster of it up on their bedroom wall. The name just stuck ever since!

I am really excited about the new SR-71 blackbird epee blade. Leon Paul took a lot of my suggestions and I believe they have built the first new world class epee in a long time. I was very happy with the pre-production blades and I am very excited to get my hands on the final version.

These traditional French grips have a curved shape to follow the contours of the hand for a perfect fit. The leather is bonded to the core with tough flexible resin glue that will last for years. The surface of the grip is treated with a "tackifying" solution which makes it extremely grippy and the absorbent surface of the leather means that it retains its grip even when damp from perspiration. The handle is finished with a friction fit aluminium feral at each end that provides a solid surface for mounting. These handles are for use with a long tang blade and a pommel.

This hi tech French handle for Foil and Epee, is designed to fit in with the rest of our lightweight range. It has a cross-linked cellular body, strengthened with Carbon fibre laminate. Its unique one piece design means it needs no pommel and it fits on a standard crosse tang reducing weight still further. The handle has a 20mm x 20mm cross section giving an extremely positive grip and is bound in a replicable absorbent non slip tape. These handles are designed for maximum reach and are the longest they can be made according to FIE rules. They have been FIE certified and legal for use in ALL competitions. Used in conjunction with the rest of our lightweight range many fencers find that they can easily pommel without loosing any control giving them an incredible 4 inch reach advantage. You will need spanner ref: TS12 to help fit this handle and a lightweight nut Ref: 93. both can be order with the handle from the dropdowns above.

Leon Paul was the first company to use aircraft grade aluminium alloy to produce lightweight guards. Our range of guards across all 3 weapons is renowned for being the most long lasting and safe on the market. The special aluminium means they can be thinner than a standard guard without compromising on strength they are therefore 20% lighter than our standard guards. We recommended the lightweight Epee inside guard socket ref: E26LW to be used in conjunction with this product.

Unlike other lightweight guards ours are heat tempered after forming to give them a hard yet springy quality that gives them their increased durability. After testing guard designs made from a single piece of material we have found that after heavy use the guard starts to wear away where it is in contact with the tang of the blade. All our guards are reinforced at the tang with a thin stainless steel reinforcement. Our lightweight guards have copper rivets to distinguish them from our normal range.

We have taken a step back from the traditional design of a pad and come up with a brand new concept with several distinct advantages over a standard pad:
- Clear design means you can see immediately if any damage has occurred to the wire without moving the pad
- When mounting a weapon it is far easier to check that the wire is running through the notch in the handle ensuring you don't trap the wires and cause shorting.
- The PVC used is durable, waterproof and will not split around the edges
- You can write your name on the inner surface of the guard and it will never rub off
- At international level all weapons have to be checked to ensure they have not been modified. A clear pad makes it far easier and quicker for armourers to carry out the weapons check.

Leon Paul Bodywires have a wealth of features that make them superior to those made by other manufacturers.

Our three-pin plug is more reliable than many others; the pins are slightly offset meaning that as the plug is pushed in the pins are forced to straighten providing increased tension and a perfect contact throughout its life. We make our wire from double spun multi core copper cable, each core being made of hundreds of twisted copper filaments. This gives the wire greater flexibility and increases its fatigue life. We coat the wire with clear plastic so that if it does eventually break you can see where it has broken and just trim it rather than replace the whole item. The covers on both plugs are made from a one-piece flexible plastic moulding. This allows the wire to flex inside the plug and prevents it from being bent repeatedly at the point of entry, which increases the life span of the wire. Finally, all of our terminations are made with piercing screws which are much more reliable and allow easy maintenance.
